Blackberry Bold Torch 9900 The Masterpiece Makeover

The handsets from RIM (Research In Motion) have been lagging behind many of the most popular phones from Apple and whole host of Android powered phones. Despite being behind, the Blackberry phones have always had a decent following. The newest model in a long line of handsets is the Bold Torch 9900.

At the heart of the Torch 9900 smartphone is a powerful 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor and 8GB’s of memory standard with the included SD card. The memory is upgradable up to 32GB’s with an optional 32MB SD card. Along with all of its power it features the latest Blackberry OS version 7.

This unlocked cell phone features a awesome 2.8″ TFT capacitive touch screen which is a definite plus. It includes an easy to operate QWERTY keyboard which makes text messaging and app activation very easy to accomplish. The touch screen is very responsive to the slightest touch so you don’t need to worry about awkward delays when using it.

Pictures and Videos

RIM decided to pull out all of the stops when it comes to taking pictures and video clips. The built-in the 5 megapixel camera is capable of shooting ultra high quality pictures along with shooting 720p video. This makes it more than capable to snap pictures when the desire hits you or when some thing happens that you really want to capture it on video. RIM included several extra features like Auto Flash, Face detecting and image stabilizer to improve the picture and video capture experience.

Screen and Keypad

The 2.8″ TFT touch screen is smaller than many of its competitors, but that does not take away from its high quality. It features a very impressive 640 x 480 pixels and a 285ppi density to give you an awesome look. It also features an accelerometer to give the ability to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait and back again just by rotating the device.

The keypad has received some improvements over previous Torch models, the keypad itself is wider thanks to the additional width of the device. The keys themselves have a contoured shape to give them a better feel. There are silver bands which separate the rows of keys to add an additional visual appeal.

OS and Apps

The Blackberry Bold Torch 9900 smartphone comes loaded with the Blackberry OS7. Which is their latest version available. The OS7 gives the Torch 9900 better looking icons and 60fps animations. The OS takes advantage of the new Liquid Graphics GPU and powerful 1.2 GHz processor to deliver the high quality graphics. Due to this, RIM says that the OS7 will not be available on any of the earlier Blackberry models. The biggest improvement seems to be the browsing capabilities, it has support for HTML5 video and will display full web pages instead of smaller versions of the pages. However, as of now RIM did follow Apple’s lead when it comes to Flash decoding, they decided not include it in the OS7. It could come in future versions of the OS, but they don’t seem to be worried about.

The App’s is where it appears that Blackberry Bold Torch 9900 falls a bit short. Not all app’s that you are used to having access to may not be available or may not function the same. If you are a huge fan of social media you will love the Social Feeds app, it brings all of your RSS feeds, access to podcasts and social media services like Twitter and Facebook to one location. If you like Instant Messenging you will be happy to know RIM includes Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk.

Final Thoughts

RIM has made some much needed improvements to the high smartphone line with the Blackberry Bold Torch 9900. With the addition of the 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor in the Torch 9900 has unlocked the powerful features of the RIM OS7. It has plenty of storage standard with 8GB’s, but by replacing the SD card in the back of the cellphone, you can up that number to 32GB’s of storage.

The 5 megapixel camera produces high quality images as well as high quality video, which is sure to please everyone. Despite the absence of flash capability the browsing experience of the 9900 is top notch and being able to view full sized web pages are a definite plus.

If you are a fan of the Blackberry already, you will have to get your hands on this phone, it will definitely make you glad you did. If you are not, I think you owe it to yourself to check it out and I think you will be pleased with what RIM has come up.
